By changing the balance of conehead and hook is is possible to swap orientation of the fly. This allows Darter Imitations, swimmer / baitfish tube fly imitation or surface wake tube flies also know as riffle hitch tube flies.

Surface Wake or Riffle Hitch Tube Flies

Skating a light weight tube fly across the surface of a pool is superb, seeing the fish come up and hit your fly on the surface is a superb experience. Small tubes 14mm to 25mm can be used for this purpose (depending upon the speed of the current). To create a surface wake fly you take a standard Tubeology tube fly on a small tube and use an additional length of hook retainer over the screw thread. Simply cut a hole in the side of the hook retainer. The line then passes through the side of the tube and down through the fly to the hook as normal. Surface current then causes the tube fly to skate across the suface of the pool.
